KEYNOTE SPEAKER

ROSEBUD BEAR SCHNEIDER

Rosebud is an enrolled Citizen of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, recognized descendant of the Lac Du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewas and Eastern Shawnee Tribe of OK and Purepecha peoples.

Rosebud was born and raised in Southwest Detroit. She is a farmer, food producer and community organizer serving the Detroit Indigenous Community and beyond. Her involvement with indigenous food sovereignty work spans over the last 15 years; first as a breastfeeding educator and community health worker and home visitor with Healthy Start and WIC and then as a farmer and nutrition educator with the Sacred Roots food sovereignty project in Detroit. Her time with Sacred Roots illuminated the passion Rosebud has to feed and care for her community. She expanded her roots throughout the Detroit Agriculture network as a farmer and former board member at Keep Growing Detroit and completed MSU’s Organic Farmers Training Program in 2017.

Over the last 10 years, Rosebud has worked as a community health worker, indigenous foods educator, market farmer and food producer with a heavy focus on the cultivation of indigenous crops. In 2022, Rosebud created Maplebuds Kitchen to further meet the needs of the community by providing maple and corn products and catered meals for community partners. Within this work, she has been able to build and dream with an amazing collective of chefs, farmers, producers and activists who care for the land and understand that food is medicine. Through this work, Rosebud along with an amazing group of chefs and farmers have co-founded the Fork Around and Find Out Collective, who are working to build out a community space and food hub on the eastside of Detroit. This food hub aims to further address the food accessibility needs and support the farmers, makers and chefs nourishing our community.

Rosebud stays connected to the tribal early childhood network by working with the Wiba Anung team, which is a collaborative partnership between Michigan State University and the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan to support the health and well-being of indigenous children and families in Michigan.

Currently, she is the co-director of Education and Engagement at Keep Growing Detroit, a non-profit urban farm with the mission to cultivate a food sovereign city where the majority of fruits and vegetables consumed by Detroiters are grown by residents within the city’s limits. In addition to this work, Rosebud organizes with the Detroit Indigenous Peoples Alliance where they aim to connect the Detroit Indigenous community with opportunities to connect and practice our cultural and land-based ways, including The Waawiiyatanong Sugarbush Project, Mnoomin harvesting, fishing and hunting camps.

Rosebud is dedicated to supporting the health and wellness of our community by educating on the importance of practicing our Indigenous foodways.  Her lifelong goal is to give her children and the coming generations the knowledge and skills to live a well-rounded healthy life woven with our ancestral ways.
